Writer's Guidelines

Representatives from 23 House attend many writer's conferences every year around the country, and we get the majority of our books from the writers that we meet in person at conferences. Because of that, we take very few manuscripts via email submission - we'd rather meet you in person, shake your hand, and hear you talk about your book first-hand. The best way to submit to 23 house is to meet one of our representatives at a conference, give us your best pitch, and we'll go from there.

If you look at our catalog, you'll see that we've published everything from sci-fi/fantasy, to "how-to" non-fiction. Our writer's guidelines are fairly simple.

  • You must have a well-thought-out idea for your book.
  • You need to have an outline and three sample chapters.
  • The last one is critical - you must have a marketing plan for your book. We'll get it into stores and online, but tell us how you plan to promote it!

For the last book that we bought, the author not only handed one of our editors a manuscript, but also included a detailed plan for how and where the book would sell best, including the target audience and how they could be reached. We published it, and sold out of the first printing inside of a year. Both 23 House and the author had a great year!

Understanding the market that you're writing for is crucial, and you must be able to give compelling reasons why a reader would pick the book up and buy it. If you have a good idea about that, then you're far ahead of most other writers.

Our feeling is that you should put at least as much time into designing your marketing strategy as you do writing your book.
